Message from the Dean

Message to the HSS community from Dean Rifkin in the aftermath of Hurrican Sandy:

“Dear Students:

As the immediate impact of Hurricane Sandy recedes a bit from our day-to-day experience here on campus, we must not forget those who lost loved ones and those who lost their homes and schools, the books in their libraries, and so much more.

As we on campus regain our equilibrium after one of the most dangerous storms in our region’s history, we must step up our efforts to help those most in need.  That means listening to a friend who is grieving the loss of a home and all the memories inside it, bringing food to a soup kitchen, or collecting books for a school.  It means participating in our community’s effort to support those in need here on campus, in Ewing and Trenton, at the Jersey Shore, and in Staten Island and on Long Island, too.

When I think of The College of New Jersey, the first and most important thing that comes to my mind is the campus community.  There are certainly larger schools.  There are schools with bigger endowments.  There are schools in the mountains and schools with a waterfall or a forest right in the middle of the campus.  But I believe that our school is first and foremost a warm and caring community.  I urge you to think about what that means to you and to take steps to be part of the caring in our community.  Please see the listings below and elsewhere on campus to engage and you will find that the more you give, the better you will feel.  Because, you see, the power of the hurricane turns out to be not as strong as the power of the human heart.
