The Compass Fellowship: 6 Months of Leadership in Retrospect

IMG_6647
Attending the Compass Fellowship national conference—Shift Series—in Washington D.C., learning about all aspects of social enterprise and entrepreneurship.

Steven Rodriguez, HSS sophomore, joins us once again to regale his progress so far as leading director of TCNJ’s Compass Fellowship. Stephen and his socially-conscious partners in crime have begun integrating ideas the organization’s principals of “social entrepreneurship” into the campus climate. Check out what was going on last time we spoke with them.

Here Stephen updates us on his progress so far–and what we should expect from the crew next time we see them.

Question: Would you mind telling me about your progress thus far this semester with the Compass Fellowship? Did you meet your goals? If so, what were they?

Stephen: This semester the Compass Fellowship met at the new TCNJ downtown office space on broad street. Dr. Celestine Chukumba helped lead workshops each week on entrepreneurship and basic business skills.

In April, the Compass group attended Shift Series, the organization’s national conference in Washington D.C. At the conference, a number of social entrepreneurs, business leaders, and compass fellows discussed their business plans and new technologies. The conference provided a great opportunity to network.

Question: What other steps forward did you make? And what is your outlook for the future?

Stephen: The goals we met were to interact with the national compass community at the Shift Series conference and to meet on a weekly basis. I’d like to meet new goals next year by becoming a well-known presence on campus.

Moving forward, I hope to continue Compass next semester by recruiting a new freshman group. Many of the fellows from this year have expressed interest in taking the club over next year. Some of our goals include expanding membership, informing more students about our club, and starting actual social business ventures.
