Dean’s Letter: Nov. 23, 2014

November 23

Dear students,

With Thanksgiving break approaching, we are entering the final phase of the semester.  No doubt, at this point, you are busy writing papers and preparing for exams.  From one perspective, you face ‘many tasks’ and ‘a lot of work.’  But there is another perspective that I would like you to consider: at this stage of the semester, you are most fully engaged in the life of the mind.  This is an exciting moment in which you are exercising intellectual autonomy and deepening your understanding of important texts, issues, processes, and events.  You are creating and synthesizing new knowledge.  Some of you are delving into the intricacies of Anaxagoras’ theory of homoeomerous stuffs, while others are analyzing data on how economic inequality has impacted hurricane Sandy recovery in New Jersey.  Further, some of you are testing hypotheses on connections between mood manipulation and food selection, while others are considering the relation between current events in Hong Kong and the legacy of Tiananmen Square.  In addition, some of you are researching the impact on method, voice, and form in authentic autobiography, while others are studying transgender-related health care in the United States.  This is a moment of intellectual adventure.  It is a moment in which to thrive. Embrace it.

Warmly,
John Sisko
