TCNJ Alternative Spring Break Trip to Russia 2013

Thanks to a generous grant from the US Department of Education …

We are going to Russia for an alternative spring break in March 2013.  Students participating in this program are all enrolled in first- or second-year Russian at The College of New Jersey.  We will spend most of the week in Vladimir, a city of about 400,000 approximately 110 miles east of Moscow.  After a week of volunteering, during which time students will be staying with host families, we will head to Moscow for a day of tourism capped off with a visit to the Bolshoi Theater for a performance of Chaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty.”  Students will travel to Russia under the direction of Dean Benjamin Rifkin, who is also a professor of Russian.

Click here for a powerpoint slide show of photos from Gymnazium #3 where we will be volunteering during Spring Break 2013.

In summer 2014 we will be going to Philadelphia to conduct oral history interviews with Russian-speaking immigrants from the former Soviet Union, learning about their perspective (and eye-witness accounts) of the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Students entering TCNJ in the fall of 2013 are eligible to apply to be part of this program for the Spring 2014 trip to Vladimir and the Summer 2015 Oral History Project in Philadelphia.  Contact Dr. Marino, of the History Department, for more information:  marino@tcnj.edu.
