Central Eurasian Studies and Middle Eastern Studies

Central Eurasian Minor

group posing outdoors at landmarkThis interdisciplinary minor offers students a broad background in the languages, history, politics, and cultures of Central Eurasia including Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Mongolia, and the Caucasus.
Five courses, three of which must be at the 300 level or higher, two chosen from the following:

HIS 341 Islamic History from Muhammad to the Ottomans
HIS 344 Commodities, Commerce, and Exchange in Medieval Eurasia
HIS 345 Mystics, Merchants, and Monarchs in Early
Modern Central Eurasia
HIS 346 Modern Central Eurasia
HIS 349 The Soviet Union

One course at the 200 level or higher in Persian, Rus sian, or Turkish (by special arrangement) or equivalent proficiency is required.


Middle Eastern Minor

This interdisciplinary minor offers students a broad background in the languages, history, politics, and cultures of the Middle East.
