Dean’s Letter: Nov. 16, 2014

November 16, 2014

Dear Students:

As you will be able to tell by scanning the list of events scheduled for this coming week, we have a lot of events (25 plus 3 study abroad info session meetings!) and we are celebrating two “themed weeks.”  This week is both International Education Week and Redefining Sex Week.  There is even one event on the list that is about sex from an international perspective.

The commonality of the events in both these series has to do with listening to and respecting others.

With regard to International Education Week, as I’m fond of saying, if you want to know about water, don’t ask a fish.  We all swim in the same American waters here.  In order to understand ourselves and our own culture better, we have to understand the perspectives of people from other cultures.

I encourage you to participate in the events of International Education Week (cge.tcnj.edu/iew) on our campus, to meet and enjoy the company of some of the foreign students on study abroad here at TCNJ, and, especially for our first-year students and sophomores, to think and plan for your own study abroad experience.  Where will you go?  On a faculty-led study tour to Armenia and Central Europe to explore the history of 20th century genocides?  To a semester-long program in Alcala, Spain?  Or do you dream of Thailand, Australia, China, South Africa, or Russia?  (You know I had to mention Russia, right?) I urge you to follow your dreams abroad to better understand our waters right here.  By the way, you can find information about scholarships for study abroad here:  cge.tcnj.edu/scholarships

With regard to Redefining Sex Week, we all can learn from considering new perspectives about this fundamentally important aspect of human behavior.  Challenge yourself and expand your horizons by learning.

This is the week to enjoy our events:  soon it will be Thanksgiving and HSS-sponsored events on campus will significantly decrease in number as we all turn our attention to papers and exams.

Sincerely,

BR

Congratulations

Congratulations to Alina Asahn and Steven Rodriguez, who have won Roebling Grants to help support special projects they’re undertaking while on study abroad next semester.  Alina will be in Alcala, Spain where she will have an internship at University Hospital Principe de Asturia.  Steven will be doing archival research at Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid during his study abroad program.  The Roebling Award is for HSS students only and you can apply for it the semester before you go on study abroad. See hss.tcnj.edu/roebling

Congratulations to Dr. Rachel Goldman (Visiting Assistant Professor in History) who was cited as an expert in the NY Times in a fascinating story about family memorabilia of Mary Berg, a Holocaust Survivor.  You can read it here:
