On October 15th, the Departments of International Studies, World Languages and Cultures, and English welcomed author Eve J. Chung to discuss her debut novel, Daughters of Shandong. As described by her personal website, “Eve J. Chung is a Taiwanese American lawyer and women’s human rights specialist. She has worked on a range of issues, including torture, sexual violence, contemporary forms of slavery, and discriminatory legislation. Her writing is inspired by social justice movements, and the continued struggle for equality and fundamental freedoms worldwide.”
The novel, which chronicles the journey of a mother and her daughters fleeing to Taiwan to escape Communist China, has received several accolades, including Women’s World’s ten most anticipated releases and Reader’s Digest’s Book Club pick for May. As noted by Penguin Random House, the book’s publisher, “Daughters of Shandong is a hopeful, powerful story about the resilience of women in war; the enduring love between mothers, daughters, and sisters; and the sacrifices made to lift up future generations.”
TCNJ warmly welcomed the author, who discussed her thoughts on Daughters of Shandong, its personal impact, and later held a book signing for the TCNJ community. We would like to thank Eve J. Chung for sharing her novel with the college and cannot wait till her next work!
