Amandla is Unity: Learning from the Soweto ’76 Student Uprisings Exhibition – 2/6/26

Amandla is Unity. Learning from the Soweto 1976 Student Uprisings. The Amandla is Unity exhibition foregrounds student-led protests against apartheid. Students in Soweto organized a peaceful march on June 16, 1976. They were met by heavily armed police and twelve year old Hector Pieterson was shot and killed. This ignited a wave of protests across South Africa and the globe. This June will mark fifty years since their struggle. Amandla is rallying cry in the resistence against apartheid that means 'power'. Protesters would call out 'Amandla' and others responded with 'Ngawethu' ('to us'), meaning 'Power to the people.' The dates listed for the exhibition is listed as February 6 to March 6 2026, location listed as 111 and 119 AIMM Galleries and Gitenstein Library. Opening Reception is February 13 at 4 PM.
