Charting New Waters: Dr. Blake Explores The Prosthetic Arts of Moby-Dick

Dr. Blake presenting research

On April 22nd at the R. Barbara Gitenstein Library, Dr. Blake delivered an immersive lecture on his book The Prosthetic Arts of Moby Dick. As taken from his website, “Blake’s most recent book is The Prosthetic Arts of Moby-Dick (Oxford), a meditation on wounding, disability, and the representation of Islam in U.S. narratives of aggrievement. The book follows nearly four decades of teaching Melville’s works to a wide variety of students and readers.” Dr. Blake is currently a professor at the College of New Jersey’s English department, where he teaches courses on 19th- and 20th-century U.S. literature and the relationship between literature and politics.

Looking towards next month, Dr. Blake will join a session with Professors Martínez Benedí and Savarese on May 3rd to discuss their recent books on Melville. We congratulate Dr. Blake on the publication of The Prosthetic Arts of Moby Dick and wish him luck with his future endeavors!
