Learn How We Developed Our Strategic Plan
HSS STRATEGIC PLAN (2024)
Strategic Vision:
We will be an inclusive and intellectually rigorous community that offers a transformative education in the humanities and social sciences, integrating theory, research and practice. Our students will have the knowledge and skills to navigate complex cultural, social, political, and ethical issues in an ever-changing world.
Mission Statement:
As teacher-scholars with expertise in the humanities and social sciences, we educate students to become critically conscious, culturally responsive, empathetic, and globally aware thinkers, communicators, and practitioners poised to address social, political, and ethical issues. We provide a rigorous, multidisciplinary, and community-oriented education that challenges students to work towards building an equitable and just world.
Values:
Equity
We strive to provide an education that meets students’ needs and values diverse experiences and perspectives.
Collaboration
Foster collaboration among diverse learners and educators that complements deep engagement in and across distinct disciplines in order to nourish intellectual curiosity and creative problem-solving.
Community Engagement
Grow and strengthen collaboration with local and global communities to provide students with an experiential education that empowers them to become responsible, compassionate, and socially conscious.
Global Awareness
Provide students with opportunities to develop competencies in diverse histories, languages and cultures while exploring socio-political and ethical issues facing communities around the world.
Innovation
Foster an environment that encourages creative pedagogies, including dynamic curricular design, the use of new technologies, and project-based learning integral to an effective, cutting-edge education that prepares students to be successful in the workforce.
Foster Scholarship
Cultivate a vibrant scholarly community that places a premium on academic freedom with faculty as teacher-scholars and students that actively contribute to original and applied research in the humanities and social sciences.
Goals:
Equity
We will work to meet the educational needs of all students, including those with disabilities.
Global Awareness
We will incorporate content created by people from historically marginalized communities in the US and around the world.
Community Engagement
We will develop new and strengthen existing partnerships with Trenton- and Ewing-based organizations that provide students with knowledge of and experiences in the local community.
Fostering Scholarship
We will encourage and support independent faculty research and collaborative scholarship among teacher-scholars. We will also encourage and support collaborative scholarship between teacher-scholars and students through the development of student-faculty research courses, year-round support of mentored research and creative work, as well as other funded opportunities for faculty-student collaboration.
