January 2014: Student Accomplishments

Criminology

Lauren Holt has entered the doctoral program in Criminal Justice at Temple University with a full scholarship, while Stephanie Cregg and Michael Ryder have begun working with Teach for America.

English

Chloe Nouvelle, a journalism major, is working at NBC News for Richard Engel, the chief foreign correspondent, after having done an internship with him.  Jamie Primeau, another journalism major, just landed a job with Seventeen Magazine, also following an internship.  Emily Witkowski, an English liberal arts major, is pursuing a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science at Rutgers University.  Ivy Hollander, an English Secondary Education major, is pursuing a law degree at the College of William and Mary.  Brian Hart and Michael Santoro, both English Secondary Education majors, are among the English Secondary Education students who will begin full-time teaching jobs in New Jersey high schools this fall.

History

Saagar Travedi is working for Teach for America.  Kyle Romero has entered an MA program in American History with a fellowship at Brandeis University.  Keith Salmieri is at William and Mary Law School, also with a fellowship.  Mary Jane (“MJ”) Dempsey has begun working with Spring Hill College’s study abroad program in Bologna, Italy and every one wants to visit her there. Brian Bolette, Katie Cugliotta, Kevin Kley, Josh Michalski, Conor Scott, Craig Segal, Kristin Shanks, and James Somma are among the History Secondary Education students who will begin full-time teaching jobs in New Jersey high schools and middle schools this fall.

International Studies

Bryan Furman (also a double major with Psychology) deferred enrollment in a Master’s degree program in Eurasian Studies (with a full scholarship) in order to accept a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.  James Lubin is an Editorial Assistant at Castle Point Publishing.  Lucas Pifano is a Global Data Analyst at Bloomberg.  Russell Wolf is working for a marketing firm and Bryan Spears is working for Kean University’s Upward Bound Project.

Philosophy

Several students are attending law school: Leo Capoferri – Seton Hall Law School with merit-based scholarship; Max Bernstein – Rutgers Camden Law School; and Colin Be – Rutgers Newark Law School.  Sage Hochschild is working at H&R Block as a tax preparer while continuing her education.  Victoria Shim is preparing to apply to medical school this fall.  Halli Gerin has started the MAT at TCNJ in Social Studies Education.

Political Science

Chaya Himelfarb (double major with Women’s & Gender Studies) has accepted a position in the Office of the Governor of the State of New Jersey.  Rachel Morris received a large scholarship and is attending law school at Lewis & Clark, one of the top environmental law programs in the US.  Matt Au has accepted a paid internship with a defense contractor in their government relations office, thanks to his networking experience at the TCNJ / Washington Center.  Ryan Gilbert and Henry Coslick are both pursuing Master’s of Public Administration at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University (a top-ranked program).

Psychology

Jennifer Frederick is going to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor for a PhD in Clinical Psychology and Women’s Studies.  Michigan’s doctoral program in Clinical Psychology is considered one of the best in the country.  Kristen Duke recently co-authored a paper with faculty member Jarret Crawford, it is currently being prepared for submission for publication review, and is headed to UC-San Diego for a doctoral program in marketing.  See also International Studies for information about Psychology major, Bryan Furman, who also majored in International Studies.

Sociology & Anthropology

Sociology major Emily Fung is now working for JP Morgan in their Corporate Analyst Development Program in New York, while Sociology major Christian Mercado is pursuing a Master’s in public Policy at the Bloustein School at Rutgers.  Another sociology major, Nicole Matyas, is enrolled in an MA program in occupational therapy at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.  Emmanuel Martinez Alcaraz, a self-designed Anthropology major, is pursuing a joint MD/PhD program at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in conjunction with both Rutgers and Princeton and is the first student in the medical school to pursue the joint PhD in Cultural Anthropology.

Women’s & Gender Studies

Adriana Sisko (double major with English) is pursuing a PhD in Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Kentucky with a TA-ship and tuition remission.  Katherine Ashbahian (double major with English) is pursuing a Master’s degree in General Theological Studies at the St. Nerness Armenian Seminar and St. Vladimir Orthodox Theological Seminary.  Chaya Himelfarb (double major with Political Science) has accepted a position in the Office of the Governor of the State of New Jersey.

World Languages

Lisa Keegs is working on a Master’s degree in marketing at Syracuse and ultimately wants to work with the Latino community in Syracuse, and Katie Heitmann is spending a year working in Haiti.  Jenna Leopold is spending the year in Buenos Aires before going forward for post-graduate study in Latin American Literature.  Courtney Farrell was offered four teaching jobs, but has chosen to teach Honors Spanish in the very same high school from which she herself graduated, Pascack Valley High School in Hillsdale, NJ.  Laura Wagner is teaching Spanish at Morris Hills High School.
